The Ghan Railway

The Ghan is the 48-hour, 2,979km passenger train operating on the Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin Central Australian Railway through Australia. The Ghan's name is an abbreviated version of its previous nickname The Afghan Express, which originates from the Afghan camel trains that trekked the same route before the advent of the railway.

The Ghan runs twice-weekly from Adelaide to Alice Springs, and once or twice a week to Darwin, depending on seasonal traffic and demand.

WesternXposure Australia conducts tours from Perth to Darwin. Once you arrive in Darwin you could board the Ghan train and take a very unique railway journey South to Alice Springs or all the way to Adelaide!

Encounter the spectacular landscapes of Australia, from the rugged Red Centre to the spectacular tropical scenery of the Top End. The Ghan Railway is an experience of a lifetime - for it is the ultimate journey through the heart of the continent.
